Where the Turf meets the Surf

Pilot at Balboa Park

Sunday we took Pilot to Balboa Park for the first time. He loved it! So many people to see and things to sniff. He had fun helping us find some geocaches and even located one for us that we couldn't find. We only stayed at Balboa for a few hours and then called it a day because it was soooo hot. We can’t wait for the cooler weather so we can go Geocaching without risking heat stroke.

Del Mar Racetrack

On Saturday we celebrated Rebecca's birthday at the Del Mar Racetrack.

We had a blast and even mananage to walk away with some winnings thanks mostly to Carl. If you ever go to the races, you have to bring Carl. He is as much fun to watch as the horses!

Can you hear me now?

I just wanted to say that I LOVE my new phone.

A few weeks ago Kenny and I got new phones from Verizon. After much debate and too much time spent reading reviews and researching phones, we decided on the LG VX8300.

It is sooo cool.

Not only does it get great reception and have an excellent speakerphone, it also takes pretty good pictures and video. The best thing of all is that it has a built-in MP3 Player!

I was just out walking Pilot and was listening to music as we strolled along. I didn't have headphones on so it was like I had my own personal theme music as I walked :) A few people looked at me funny wondering where the music was coming from!

Anyway, that is all. I love my phone. Don't be jealous, Kenny ;)

We're with the band...

Last week we were invited by one of Kenny's students, Dave, to a concert at the House of Blues. He was going to be playing as drummer for the band "Cinematic Sunrise." Also performing that night was "The Sounds of Animals Fighting."

It was an interesting night. We showed up and got in line at the ticket counter only to find out that the guy behind the counter couldn't find our name on the guest list. We put on our best, "We're with the band" faces and asked him to check again mentioning that we personally know the drummer :) After a bit of searching, he found our tickets and we headed downstairs to the concert only to be stopped by two bouncers who asked us to empty our pockets. Well, Kenny ALWAYS carries his Buck Knife pocket knife (so small and insignificant... your pen could do more damage!)… He pulled it out of his pocket and the bouncers just stared at him. In order to not get thrown out, Kenny rushed back up the stairs and "hid" the knife somewhere outside.

Dave's band played first, but only did 3 songs. A bummer because they were good. We then waited and waited around for "The Sound of Animals Fighting." Hey, we figured that everyone was there to seem them and they had a crazy name so we had to stay. They were... umm... entertaining.

At about 10:30pm we finally left the House of Blues. We were tired and hungry (we hadn't eaten since 11:00am). To top off the night, Kenny's knife was no longer in its hiding place outside :( I guess someone else likes Buck knives too! Oh well.

All in all, it was an interesting night. Probably would have been better if we had food in our bellies and a Buck knife in our pocket, but we still got to see Dave perform and for one night say that we were with the band. It was pretty cool. Kenny's students are so talented!

Downtown

Kenny's parents came down to visit this weekend and we had a great time goofing off downtown. Sunday we went to Seaport Village, Balboa Park and the Gaslamp. We had fun playing tourist, but also were able to get a few geocaches while we were down there.

There was a geocache in the middle of all these people. It was located behind the scale. We had to be sneaky. If you look at the picture you will see that it didn't work so well because nearly everyone on the bench was staring at us!

But we got the geocache!

We have a new roommate that has been living with us for the last few days. No wild toga parties, but her and Pilot have been “hitting the sauce”

This weekend Kenny broke his toe :(

We aren't exactly sure how it happened, but are pretty convinced the incident occurred sometime on Saturday when Kenny was kicking small children... it’s okay, we were at Tae Kwon Do... the kids like to be kicked!

Actually, it probably happened while we were sparring at the end of class… Jen always beats Kenny up in class!

New Zealand Highlights

So, today I finally took down the New Zealand clock that I had placed at the top of this page... how sad! Most of you have probably seen the pictures from New Zealand, but I figured I'd post a few highlights of the trip here too...

We rented two awesome campervans that we drove around the North and South Islands. The back had a bed and little kitchen area. We did quite a few geocaches in New Zealand and even managed to get a few International First to Finds! This picture is of our van at the first geocache we did in New Zealand.

The lakes in New Zealand are fed by glaciers and are unbelievably blue. The first day it was a bit overcast and rainy, so the color didn't show up as much, but it was still incredible!

The second day we made our way to the ocean to see the Little Blue Penguins. New Zealand is the only place in the world where you can see them naturally. They were so cute and we wanted to bring one home to play with Pilot! We also saw Yellow-Eyed Penguins and the Great Albatross (again only place in the world to see them on the mainland).

One of the highlights of the trip was a helicopter ride that included a glacier landing! Our pilot was great and even gave us two different glacier landings although the tour only included one! It had snowed on the mountains the night before so we were able to play in fresh, waist deep snow up at 12,000 feet. It was an experience that we will never forget.

A few days later, we climbed and rappelled in a cave on the North Island for over four hours. The adventure started with a 100 foot rappel in the cave down a waterfall! It was pitch black and certainly got our adrenaline pumping. We did 4 more rappels and lots of climbing under and over rocks and through underground rivers. The trip ended with a rock climb up a waterfall as we emerged out of the cave.

We had a few other adventures including hiking, fishing (New Zealand is the trout fishing capital of the world), rabbit shearing, and soaking in the water at Hot Water Beach (it was boiling!). Kenny was also honored as a Maori chief... you have to see the video! It was a great trip and we have tons of pictures, so if you haven't checked them out feel free to look at our online albums.

We won!!!

So, we have been playing volleyball every Sunday night for the past few weeks in the Santee Rec League.

The team: Kenny & Jen, Eric & Sheree, and Danny & Tonita (big surprise huh?)

Anyway, until now, most of our games have been pretty close, but the win was always elusive. Until last Sunday. We finally won a game! This was no easy feat since we were down one player… Tonita was in Nor Cal.

Now, just so you all know… we aren’t terrible players (at least we don’t think so). However, until recently only 2 of us had ever actually played volleyball competitively. So I think we are doing pretty good :)

Anyway, if any of you are ever in Santee on a Sunday night and want to cheer us on… or just want a cheap laugh at our expense, stop by!

We are home and mostly settled back into the routine of things... although we still can't cook for ourselves without a few surprises thanks to Danny, Tonita, Rebecca & Hannah. They had fun ripping the labels off our canned goods while we were gone! I guess we had it coming after doing it to D&T for their honeymoon :)

One week down...

And one more to go... We are in Auckland (North Island) now and going to head south for a few days to check out the Pacific Rim of Fire and some volcanic action! The weather on the South Island was cold, about 45F in the day and 32F at night, maybe colder, but here it is a warm 60F and that is with an overcast layer of cloud.

Again, we apologize to all for the massive amount of photos taken. :)

Queenstown

Well, we have made it over 2000 Kilometers and are in Queenstown at the moment. Today we drove from the East Coast down to the Southernmost tip and are now heading North to the West Coast. It is beautiful and we have already taken 1 Gig of photos... we apologize in advance to those of you who will have to sit through them all!

We arrived!

We arrived in New Zealand safe and sound. I only have a few minutes before this internet connection dropps off, but I wanted to let you all know that we are doing well and having a blast!
